Miya Otake, Harp

Miya Otake

A graduate of Royal Academy of Music in London, England, Miya Otake is a talented harpist, performer and teacher.

She began to study harp at seven years-old in Japan with Taeko Okajima. After immigrating to Canada, she continued her musical studies at Vancouver Academy of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music under Taka Kling. She has won many awards and appeared in numerous recitals and TV programs.

After completing her post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Daphne Borden, Skaila Kanga, and Marisa Robles in London, England she pursued further studies in Nice, France with Madame Elisabeth Fontain-Binoche.

Miya has performed in Canada, USA, Europe, and Japan. Her notable performances include the duet with her sister, Kaori Otake at Carnegie Hall in New York.

In 2003, she founded the Westcoast Harp Ensemble. Currently, she is the Principal Harp instructor at Langley Community Music School and the Vancouver Academy of Music, where she also directs the VAM Harp Ensemble. Her students have received Most Promising Student Awards from the Kiwanis International Music Festivals and Silver Medal Awards from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). Miya was recently awarded the Teacher’s Certificate of Recognition by the RCM.
