Brenda Campbell, Piano

Brenda Campbell has been a very active pianist in Vancouver since 1992. She is in constant demand as an accompanist for instrumentalists and singers, and maintains a busy teaching schedule. She has been the accompanist for many masterclasses given by international musicians, including Steven Isserlis, Raphael Wallfisch, and Desmond Hoebig. Brenda is often heard in recital with her husband, cellist Brian Mix, and has played in Vancouver, Victoria, the Sunshine Coast, and interior BC. Along with Brian, she had the honor of a piece dedicated to her by the late Jean Coulthard. Brenda has also adjudicated piano at music festivals, taught music theory, and has written articles about composers and music for younger listeners for the Vancouver Recital Society. Brenda studied with Lorraine Toljanich and Melinda Coffey before completing a B.Mus. degree at UBC, studying piano with Douglas Finch, vocal and instrumental accompanying with Rena Sharon, and voice with James Fankhauser and David Meek. Brenda has completed two Artist Residences at the Banff Centre for the Arts, and has also received instruction from Gilbert Kalish, Laurence Lesser, Eric Wilson, Tom Rolston, and Dennis Simons, among others.

Libby Yu, Piano

Libby Yu

Pianist Libby Yu captured the coveted First-Prize of the 27th CBC Radio National Competition for Young Performers and Second Place in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition.  In 1995, she was bestowed international recognition when she was awarded a Diploma of Honour at the 13th International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland, being among three Canadian pianists to have ever been given this honour.

As soloist, Libby has graced the stages of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, Le Chatre in Nohant, to name a few.  A favourite with audiences, Libby has also performed as soloist with the major symphony orchestras such as the Netherlands Philharmonic, Montreal, Toronto, National Arts Centre, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver, CBC Vancouver, Manitoba Chamber and Victoria. She has also performed at international festivals such as the “Chopin chez George Sand” Festival in Nohant, France, the Banff School, and the Holland Music Sessions, where she was chosen for the World Tour.

Libby is featured regularly on CBC Radio, for whom she also performed the world premiere of “mabushii sora e…” by Canadian composer Chris Paul Harman with the CBC Radio Vancouver Orchestra in a historic “Live to Europe” broadcast to the European Broadcasting Union.  The recording  “Brahms: Sonatas and Songs” with violist Nicolo Eugelmi and mezzo-soprano Mariateresa Magisano (Skylark Music 2002) was praised in a review in the Strad Magazine and was also named a “Strad Selection” by The Strad.  She also has two solo albums: Chopin Recital 1 and Chopin Recital 2, featuring the complete Ballades and Etudes Op. 10.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Libby began her early studies with Phyllis Taylor and Edward Parker and starting in 1990, with Lee Kum-Sing at the Vancouver Academy of Music, for over a decade.  An active teacher and adjudicator as well as a mother blessed with three young children, Dr. Yu earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of British Columbia in 2010.

Lorraine Ambrose, Piano

Lorraine Ambrose grew up in Edmonton where she attended the University of Alberta and completed her Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance. She also received Associate and Licentiate Degrees from the Western Board of Music and had subsequent studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and in Munich, Germany. After her formal studies, she accepted a position as piano instructor at the Community Music School of Vancouver, now called the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Lorraine enjoys teaching students of all levels. They have been recipients of numerous awards in local, national and international competitions, including concerto performances with professional orchestras in Toronto, Montreal, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Lorraine is also proud to have had her students receive scholarships to attend such prestigious schools as the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute, the Eastman School, and the Royal Academy of Music (London).

Krystyna Tucka, Piano

Krystyna Tucka

Master Degree of the Music Academy St. Moniuski in Poland; postgraduate studies and Virtuoso Diploma at the Ecole Normale de Paris Alfred Cortot; Artist Diploma, Vancouver Academy of Music studying with Lee Kum-Sing; multiple prize winner of national piano competitions in Poland, prize winner of the international competitions in Europe and the first prize winner of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Piano Competition— Canada. Soloist with Montreal Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Baltic Symphony Orchestra.

Juan Wang, Piano

Juan Wang

Ms. Wang received her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Vancouver Academy of Music, studying with Mr. Lee Kum Sing. She was a prize winner of numerous competitions including the Kay Meek competition.

She has given solo recitals in Canada, the United States and China. She has appeared throughout Switzerland as both a soloist and chamber musician. She has been invited to the Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary, the Gold Country Piano Institute in California, the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy, the Holland Music Session and the Warsaw Piano Workshop.

She has performed as a soloist with the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre and the West Coast Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Wang studied the Suzuki method with Merlin Thompson and Rita Hauck. She was an adjudicator at the Arbutus Music Festival. She is also a faculty member at British Columbia Conservatory of Music and an active collaborative pianist.

Sheila Hardy, Piano

Sheila Hardy

Sheila Hardy has earned her ARCT performer’s and teacher’s degree as well as her Bachelor of Music in Performance from UBC.

Ms. Hardy has been a VAM faculty member since 1977 and has been an active committee member of the Vancouver Music Festival Workshop for piano since 1980.

From 1964-1971 Sheila was an active chamber musician and teacher in Paris and Southern California. Sheila Hardy is a member of RMTA.

Martha Brickman, Piano

Martha Brickman

Martha Brickman is a graduate of the Conservatoire in Montreal in harpsichord and chamber music (Premier Prix). Martha was a student of Kenneth Gilbert, and studied the Suzuki Method with Susan Magnusson.

Ms. Brickman is a former Professor of Harpsichord at Laval University and Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique. An active performer, Brickman has appeared on stage for Vancouver’s Masterpiece Music, Early Music Vancouver, UBC’s Noon-Hour Concerts, CBC’s Arts National and Westcoast Performance, Hornby’s Summer Festival, and Victoria’s Summer Festival.

Martha has also released a recording entitled Baroque Gems of the 18th Century. Ms. Brickman has adjudicated many local piano competitions including Burnaby Clef, Student Performers’ Guild, and the North Shore Festival.

Donna Lee-Leung, Piano

Donna Lee-Leung

Donna Lee-Leung has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia.  She studied with Professors Mary Tickner, Robert Rogers and Lee Kum Sing (chamber ensemble).

Donna’s love and dedication to teaching led her to complete a Bachelor of Education degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.  She has attended numerous pedagogy conferences in Calgary (studied Suzuki Method with Merlin Thompson), Los Angeles (World Piano Pedagogy Conference) and Toronto.

She is a member of the B.C. Registered Music Teachers’ Association.  Donna has been a faculty member in the Piano Division at VAM since 1998.

Angela Schiwy, Piano

Angela Schiwy

Angela Schiwy is a graduate of the UBC School of Music where she majored in piano performance, studying with Lee Kum-Sing. In France she worked with Nicole Rolet de Castelle at the Schola Cantorum de Paris. Following her studies Angela performed with chamber music ensembles, both locally and on tour in BC, and taught piano at the Vancouver Academy of Music starting in 1978. She trained in the Suzuki method with Haruko Kataoka at the American Suzuki Institute as well as at workshops held in San Francisco and Vancouver. Her students have achieved excellent results in Royal Conservatory exams, and she herself holds the ARCT in performance. Later, in addition to teaching privately, she held a number of positions as archivist at universities in Canada and the United States, at the City of Vancouver Archives, and at the United Nations in New York.

Lee Kum Sing, Piano

Lee Kum Sing

Lee Kum Sing studied with Gerhard Puchelt in Berlin, and with Julius Katchen and Magda Tagliaferro in Paris. Mr. Lee started his solo and orchestral career in Singapore (1953) and made his New York debut in Carnegie Hall (1963) and his London debut in Wigmore Hall (1969).

He has collaborated with Cho-Liang Lin, Alfredo Campoli, Rivka Golani, and Kim Borg. Mr. Lee’s performances have been broadcast on BBC, CBC, Asian, Australian and European radio and TV.

Professor Lee has been VAM Piano Department Head since 1971 and was a Professor of Piano at UBC (1972-2005). He is currently on the faculty of international summer festivals in Holland, Poland, France, Belgium, Italy, Japan, China, USA and Canada, and is Visiting Professor to several music conservatories in China.

Professor Lee sits on the jury of international piano competitions, including Queen Elisabeth (Brussels), Chopin (Warsaw), Rachmaninoff (Moscow), and China (Beijing).

Joan Hurst, Piano

Joan Hurst

Joan Hurst graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Music, with a major in piano and a minor in classical guitar.

Ms. Hurst spent her fifth year studying ‘Special Teaching Techniques’ with Robert Rogers. Joan studied the Suzuki Piano Method under Dorothy Mae Williams, Doris Koppleman, and Haruko Kataoko.

For ten years, Ms. Hurst was Music Director and Co-ordinator of Jerome’s Music School, where she taught theory and the Yamaha Music Course.

Joan Hurst has been a member of the VAM faculty since 1987.

Djina Stojkov, Piano

Djina Stojkov

Djina Stojkov is a graduate of the University of Arts, Belgrade, Serbia with a Bachelor of Music in Pedagogy and a Diploma in Piano Performance and Music Theory.

Miss Stojkovic completed her Suzuki Teacher Training with Susan Magnusson, and has been a member of the VAM faculty since 2009.

Teresa Ho, Head of Suzuki Piano

Teresa Ho

Teresa Ho graduated with a Bachelor of Music at UBC where she studied with Professor Jane Coop. Prior to her undergraduate studies, Ms. Ho received her ARCT in piano performance and pedagogy.

Ms. Ho studied with Winifred Scott Wood and Robin Wood at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where she was elected as an Associate in piano performance and pedagogy. In the 1980′s Teresa studied with Haruko Kataoka, co-founder of the Suzuki Piano Method.

Teresa Ho has been Head of the Suzuki Piano Department at VAM since 1988.

Amanda Chan, Piano

Amanda Chan

Amanda Chan has achieved recognition as concert pianist, teacher, lecturer, adjudicator, and examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Amanda has given concerts in Canada and abroad as a soloist and chamber player. Born and raised in Vancouver, she started her studies with Edward Parker and was highly successful in her early competitive career.

After completing the ARCT diploma and receiving the Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in Canada, she was awarded Canada Council Arts grants and full scholarships to complete her bachelor of Music degree under Kum-Sing Lee and Master of Music degree at the University of Southern California (USC) under John Perry. Finishing head of her graduating class at both institutions, she was awarded the prestigious “Top Graduate” award for both degrees. She continued her education with doctoral and post-graduate studies at USC and the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto under Marc Durand.

Ms. Chan is on Faculty at the UBC School of Music.

Saida Matyukov, Piano

Saida Matyukov

Saida Matyukov is a graduate of the Moscow State Conservatory of Music. Ms. Matyukov was an active performer throughout the former Soviet Union performing in Moscow and St. Petersburg and collaborating with such conductors as Maxim Shostakivich and Rudolf Barshai.

Following post-graduate studies with Teodor Gutman, Saida was appointed to the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. In 1981, Ms. Matyukov emigrated to Canada where she taught at the Mount Royal College in Calgary and has served with distinction on VAM faculty since 1987.

Julie Lowe, Piano

Julie Lowe

Julie Lowe has recorded for CBC and WDR (West German Radio). Julie has been an active recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician throughout Canada, US, and Europe, and has received numerous awards at international piano competitions.

Ms. Lowe studied piano with Lee Kum-Sing (VAM and UBC), Louis Kentner (England), Guenter Ludwig, Carmen Graf-Adnet and chamber music with the Amadeus Quartet.

Julie Lowe holds a Performer’s Certificate from VAM, a B.M. (Performance) from UBC, and also studied in Europe at the Hochschule fuer Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna and Hochschule fuer Musik in Cologne where she received her Reifepruefung and Konzertexamen degrees in performance.

Yumiko Van Rooi, Piano

Yumiko Van Rooi

Yumiko Van Rooi received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Toho Gakuen University of Music (Tokyo, Japan).  Yumiko continued her studies with Saida Matyukov at the Vancouver Academy of Music, receiving her Artist Diploma.

Ms. Van Rooi has performed in master classes for Robert Silverman, John O’Connor, Mikhail Vosklesensky, Jan Ekier, and Lee Kum Sing.  Yumiko has also studied with Akiko Teranishi as well as Suzuki Piano Pedagogy with Susan Magnusson and Merlin Thompson.
